Generations now survive a closed tab
A long render used to depend on your browser tab staying open. It doesn't any more.
The worst way to lose four minutes and a handful of credits is to close the wrong tab. We'd all done it at least once. So generation is now a durable job, written down before we ever call the provider.
What that means for you
- Close the tab, lose your wifi, shut the laptop. The job keeps going and the result lands in your files.
- Come back to the project later and a generation that was still running is still running, instead of having quietly disappeared.
- If a job fails after your credits were taken, you get them back. That happens inside the job itself, so it isn't something you have to email us about.
Why this took us a while
Starting a background job is easy. The hard part is guaranteeing a job is never billed twice, and never picked up by two workers at once. Claiming a job and marking it finished now happen in one place, guarded so that two rescuers racing for the same row can't both win. We got that wrong twice before we got it right.
Nothing changes about how you generate. The only thing you should notice is that a whole category of small disasters stopped happening.
